When RASPIRE MUSIC first told people that we made Caribbean Hip Hop – an inventive yet mellow genre of music that cross pollinates Dancehall, Hip Hop and Reggae, we got a few raised eyebrows. Some say it's crazy, others say it's innovative and fresh but everyone agrees that it has a positive and conscious energy. Undoubtedly, the diversity of Caribbean Hip Hop has a universal appeal as there is something for everyone.
It’s hard to capture the cool and welcoming demeanor of the talented Jamaican artiste and songwriter, CALICO . His powerful and distinctive voice brings back memories of Bounty Killer. His witty, thoughtful and positive lyrics draws comparisons to Damian “ Junior Gong” Marley and his unapologetic defense of equal rights and justice (and his fondness of unicycles) is in the vein of Peter Tosh. At the core, CALICO is a dancehall DJ yet he represents a new generation of artists such as Collie Buddz and K’Naan that balances and blends different musical influences for a fresh, conscious, multi-genre sound.
After a 3 year hiatus during which time he became a Rastafarian and a father, CALICO returns with his much anticipated debut album, MIDTOWN CALI WAYS. A natural blend of Dancehall, Hip Hop and Reggae, the album has distinct island elements yet maintains the hard hitting percussion and “the needle to record” sound that comes straight from the Hip Hop playbook.
With its contemporary and original material (no samples or covers), MIDTOWN CALI WAYS offers something for everybody and a musical interpretation of the generational overlap of cultures and styles. The hard hitting and at times introspective lyrics are a diary of the youth generation through CALICO's eyes and tinted by his global perspective. He draws upon various experiences, yard and abroad, to tell his story of finding a balance spiritually and musically between the CALICO then and the CALICO now.
The universality and simplicity of the lyrics allows MIDTOWN CALI WAYS to attract not only traditional Reggae and Dancehall fans but also mainstream fans who have grown to love music from the islands. CALICO does a decent job of honoring his Dancehall roots and at the same time, MIDTOWN CALI WAYS is in the now, and even peers in the future with the cross pollination of genres. The album is an assortment of sounds and what sets it apart is the appealing manner in which a wide array of musical influences are blended. It is truly refreshing music that cross all types of boundaries(racial, class, creed etc). Midtown has a positive vibe with an inspiring feeling and surely has something for everybody. We live in a world where cultures and lifestyles collide and Midtown is the place we meet.
